So today, my husband and I decided at the last minute to grab our go-bags and our kids, and head out to the woods to go hiking. We approached this idea as a "practice-run" for our survival training thus far.
We did really well for our first run, and we learned a lot about ourselves as a group. The youngest was in charge of leading and navigating the hiking trails today, so our main points of training today were hand signals, silent stepping, survival buddies, and water.
Hand signals are really important to learn, and believe it or not, extremely important to practice amongst your group. Learning universal hand signals seems easy, but using them doesn't come natural to us. After many fumbles, giggles, confused looks, and missed signals, we were able to function smoothly and effortlessly at the end of the day.
The use of hand signals plays into our concept of silent stepping. In the event of any type of apocalypse, navigating the world as quietly as possible will be CRUCIAL to your groups survival. We had a hell of a time expressing this importance to our children today: No talking, giggling, snapping sticks, scuffing feet, throwing rocks....the list goes on and on. This is probably one of the most important aspects to practice if you have children!
We assigned survival buddies amongst our group today. Out of our group of six, we paired off into three groups of two. Survival buddies are in charge of the welfare of the other. Check on their status, to make sure the see hand signals, help them with their packs, give them water, etc. This is to ensure there are less casualties amongst the group, and helps alleviate the leader of checking on every single member all of the time.
Water. WATER. WATER!!!! This is single handedly the most over-looked and forgotten aspect of survival. Bring fresh water in canteens and camelbacks. Pack water purification tablets or filters. Locate and remember (or mark) fresh water sources in the area. Encourage, remind, push, and force your group to drink water often as you are on the move. If you have children, add this factor to your training plan. It's amazing how long kids will go wothout drinking water without reminders.
Thats all for today preppers <3
Survive on!
